Electric scooter
An electric scooter is considered a bicycle if it has a maximum speed of 20 km/h and a motor with a maximum of 250 W. However, it is important to note that the limit applies to the continuous (nominal) power – which means that the electric scooter may temporarily have a higher so-called peak power, for example up to 1000 W, as long as the nominal power does not exceed 250 W.
If the electric scooter exceeds 20 km/h in speed or has a motor with a nominal power of more than 250 W, other rules apply. The next classification is Moped class II and then Moped class IThere are technical requirements, such as braking systems, that must be met for an electric scooter to be classified as a moped.
Essentially, if it reaches up to 25 km/h it is considered Moped class II, while if the speed exceeds 40 km/h and the motor is stronger than 250 W, it is classified as Moped class I. For Moped class I, an AM driving license is required, the vehicle must be registered, and a helmet must be worn. Moped class II requires a driver's license and mandatory use of a helmet. If the electric scooter does not meet the requirements for a bicycle, Moped class I or II, it may not to be used on public roads.
Electric bike
For the requirements to apply to an electric bicycle, the motor must be limited to 250 W nominal (continuous) power and only assist pedaling up to 25 km/hThis means that the engine can temporarily deliver a higher so-called peak power, for example up to 1000 W, as long as the nominal power does not exceed 250 W. The electric bike must also be pedaled for the motor to work – it must not be able to drive on its own without the user's pedaling power.
Deviation from these requirements results in the vehicle being classified as moped, which entails other technical requirements, registration requirements, driving license and insurance.
We strongly recommend the use of a helmet, especially if the driver is under 15 years old, although it is not mandatory.
Read our blog posts for more information about the rules that apply to electric scooters and electric bicycles.

The Ausom DT2 Pro is super fun to drive – smooth acceleration, good balance and battery life lasts all day. Feels stable and well built, highly recommended!
Been riding the Ausom DT2 Pro for a while now and it feels really stable and strong. Good range, comfortable to ride and no hassles so far. Feels like a lot of scooter for the money.
I've had my Ausom DT2 Pro for a few weeks now and it's a really fun and powerful scooter. It pulls well with its dual motors and feels stable even at slightly higher speeds — perfect for both commuting and weekend trips. The battery lasts a long time (up to about 71 m/115 km according to the manufacturer) so I don't have to constantly charge, and the brakes with E-ABS together with hydraulic discs feel safe.
Some minor downsides are that the charger can be a bit slow (and some users have had issues with the original charger), plus the weight makes it a bit cumbersome to fold up and carry. All in all, it's a really good scooter for the price, but it's not perfect — especially if you're looking for something super lightweight or want absolutely flawless build quality.
