What is IP rating?
IP stands for "Ingress Protection" or "International Protection" and is an international standard that describes how well a device is protected against the ingress of solid objects (such as dust) and liquids (such as water). The classification consists of two numbers:
- The first digit indicates the protection against solid particles, t.ex. dust.
- The second digit describes the protection against liquids, t.ex. rain.
The higher the numbers, the better protection the device offers.
Common IP Classes and their meaning:
- IP20: Protected against large solid particles, but no protection against liquids. Best suited for indoor use.
- IP54: Protection against dust and splashes of water. Perfect for urban environments and light rain.
- IP65: Fully dustproof and resistant to low pressure water jets. Good for cycling in rainy weather.
- IP66: Protection against dust and stronger water jets. Suitable for challenging weather conditions.
- IP67: Fully dust and water resistant. Can be submerged in water up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes – ideal for adventures in extreme environments.
- IPX4: Protected against splashing water from all directions. Can withstand light rain showers without any problems.
- IPX5: Withstands water jets from all directions, such as heavy rain or driving through puddles.
Note: The letter "X" in an IP rating means that the protection for that category has not been tested or specified.
Practical tips for IP classification:
- IP54 or higher: Recommended for most users who drive in varying weather conditions.
- IP65 or IP66: Perfect for those who cycle frequently in rainy climates or challenging terrain.
- IP67: For adventurous users who may encounter extreme weather conditions.
Important about water resistance:
It is important to understand the difference between water resistance and waterproofness. Our e-bikes and e-scooters are designed to withstand light rain and splashes, but they are not waterproof. Damage caused by liquid, such as heavy rain or immersion in water, is therefore not covered by the warranty.
Please also note that water resistance may decrease over time due to normal wear and tear. To protect your bike:
- Avoid exposing it to heavy rain for extended periods.
- Keep it dry when not in use.
- Follow the manufacturer's maintenance procedures.
Why is IP rating important?
Understanding the IP rating will help you choose the right product for your needs. A higher rating will provide better protection and longer durability, especially if you plan to use your e-scooter or e-bike in variable or challenging weather conditions.
